1774 – Downton & Salisbury – WILLIAM GEORGE MATON, Physician, later Royal Physician, author and Botanist was born.  He was the son of a wine merchant. He was educated at the Free Grammar School, Salisbury. and Queens College Oxford.  He purchased Redlynch House, Downton in 1834
