Our Tribute To Wiltshires’ Heroic & Famous Sons and Daughters

Here we remember those men and women with Wiltshire connections who paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst in the service of their country during both war and peace. This includes civilians who died due to war time action as well as those who died as prisoners of war, and through accident or disease. We also recognise the sacrifices made by the Emergency Services of Wiltshire.

We also remember the events when visitors and Wiltshire folk lost their lives in major disasters within the county, together with traumatic events outside of the county, where those with Wiltshire connections lost their lives.

We also celebrate the lives of individuals connected to the County, who had global, national or county-wide fame for achievement in the arts, sporting, literary, sciences, political. religious and medical fields.

This list below displays these sacrifices and notable events which occurred on this day in history over a period of 7 days, this is the current date and three days either side.

07-05-1915Event - Military1915 - R.M.S. Lusitania, on its 202nd Atlantic crossing, was torpedoed and sunk off the Southern Coast of Ireland. Of a total of 1959 passengers and crew only 761 survived. 128 casualties were American and it is suggested that this act prompted the USA to join the war although they did not do so immediately.  It is known that the ship was carrying ammunition and the German authorities issued a warning to passengers that the Lusitania was a legitimate target and that it would be sunk if encountered.  Many of the casualties are buried in Queenstown, Ireland.  It is interesting that First Class Casualties were buried in one section, second class in another section and steerage in another.  130 victims were buried in a single mass grave presumably those unidentified and from the steerage section of the ship.  Even in death the class divide was upheld.

08-05-1945Event - Military1945 - VE or Victory in Europe Day - Following news of the German surrender in WWII, spontaneous celebrations erupted all over the world, including in Western Europe and the United States. As the Germans had officially set the end of operations for 23:01 CET on 8 May 1945, this day is celebrated across Europe as VE Day or V-E Day. On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany's surrender the day before. Even though VE Day marked victory for Europe over Germany, it did not mark the end of World War Two. Many soldiers, sailors and pilots were sent to the east to fight against the Japanese, who had not yet surrendered. On 15 August 1945, the allies officially defeated Japan and the fighting in WWII finally ceased.
