Prisoners of War

December 1916 saw the arrival of around two hundred German prisoners of war.  They arrived from Dorset by special train to Calne railway station and then marched through the town under very close guard to the camp based at Yatesbury.  Whilst marching they seemed in good spirits and singing songs in their native language.  Although large crowds gathered as they marched passed there was no animosity shown towards them from what was a very curious crowd of onlookers.  The prisoners would be set to work on roads and drainage systems in the area.  Some of the prisoners had been in Wiltshire before.  One had visited whilst working in a bazaar that was held in the yard of the White Hart Inn and another had worked in Devizes as a leather cutter.  Some were very skilled craftsman carving toys and other items from wood.  One prisoner named Ruger made an engraving on a slice from a tree trunk of the camp at Yatesbury and this is on display at the Calne Heritage Centre.
