The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin

In the valley of that name (Wylye) has a church (St. Mary), mostly perpendicular, restored in 1844. There is a fine east window, consisting of a triplet of lancets, ornamented with dog-tooth and having good corbels. The tower arch is decorated , but the tower is perpendicular. It contains a bell, inscribed ‘1587. Give thanks to God’, while another, presumably older, has a cross with ‘Ave Maria’. The very fine Jacobean pulpit with tester, formerly in the old church at Wilton, was presented to Wylye by Lord Herbert, when he built the new church there. The reading-desk and altar-table are also Jacobean. Over the south porch is an old carving of the Crucifixion. The pre-Reformation chalice preserved among the church plate must not be overlooked. it is hall-marked 1525 and corresponds closely with examples at Highworth and at Trinity College, Oxford. The Bell Inn, off the A303/A36

Built in the 14th century and much modernised retaining as many original features as possible.  In the late 1950’s early 1960’s the inn was scheduled to be preserved as an ancient building.  The inn adjoins the 12th century church.  The bar is decorated with old horse-bells and furnishings; the first church bell was cast in the courtyard.  This was a stop for the London-Exeter coach, the journey taking 19 hours in 1820.  A coach overturned while fording the stream nearby, and the postillion lost his life in a gallant attempt to save the passengers.  The figure in the mill stream marks the spot; the old water mill is still working.
