Florence Nightingale

It cannot go unmentioned that “The Lady with The Lamp”  who found fame with her devoted care to the injured during the Crimean War is buried in the churchyard at St. Margaret’s.  Florence was born in Florence, Italy on 12th May 1820 and died peacefully in her sleep at 10 South Street, Park Lane, London on 13th August 1910 age 90.  She did not wish to be buried, her wish was that her body be used for medical research.  The Government offered a state funeral and burial in Westminster Abbey.  Neither Florence’s wishes nor the offer from the Government were accepted by her relatives and she was laid to rest in the churchyard where her parents were also buried.  Her funeral service was held in St. Paul’s Cathedral on 20th August 1910 and her coffin was escorted to the church at Wellow by train to Romsey station and escorted by soldiers from the regiments she nursed in the Crimea.    Read more about Florence Nightingale and her life
