The Parish Church of St. Andrew

The Legend of Wanborough Church

A very great number of years ago, there were two old Maids living in Wanborough, evidently animated with the idea that neither should stand higher in the public estimation than the other, and when the Church was going to be built, one of them said she would pay the expense of building the Tower. The other, not to be outdone, said, Then I will build a spire or Steeple at the other end. And the outcome was a Church with both Tower and Steeple.
