Parish History

Upton Scudamore is a beautiful village on the main road between Warminster and Westbury.  The parish at one time also included Thoulstone and Hisomley. Thoulstone moved to Westbury in 1844 and Hisomley to the new parish of Chapmanslade in 1934.  The village is named after the Scudamore family; they lived at the Manor House of Upton from around the Conquest to the 15th Century. The lands were then sold to the Hungerford family who added it to their sheep rearing estate located at Heytesbury.  The Hungerford family ran the Manor until it was then let to the Temple family of Bishopstrow in 1662. The Temples purchased more of the surrounding land, and stayed in the Manor until the 20th century.  In the Domesday Survey of 1086, Upton was a very prosperous village with a population of around 225. It also mentions that the largest holdings in the village belonged to Alfred of Marlborough and was worth £9; it was this land that eventually passed to the Hungerfords.
