The Prince Leopold Inn was named after Queen Victoria’s youngest son. While attending Oxford University between 1872 & 1875, Prince Leopold and his tutor rented nearby Boyton Manor as a retreat and frequented the local area. The Upton Lovell Public House was built in 1878 to service the substantial cloth mill that was the commercial centre of the valley and was named after the Royal. The Prince Leopold Inn is located at 54, Upton Lovell with the terraced riverside garden looking across the River Wylye. The bar is decorated with cartoons produced by artist David Burnett.

Poor Law, Charity and the Workhouse
Upton Lovell came under the jurisdiction of Warminster Poor Law Union. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, usually one representing a constituent parish. Overseers of the Poor was the previous term used but their roles were similar in that they administered poor relief such as money, food and clothing as part of the Poor Law System. Usually Churchwardens or Landowners were selected for these roles.
