Parish Church of All Saints
In the Wylye valley has a church (All Saints) of much interest with good Early English work, especially the tower and chancel arches. Note (1) Norman font of Purbeck marble; (2) piece of a Saxon cross-shaft, 9th cent; (3) Jacobean pulpit; (4) in blocked doorway to rood-loft stairs at SE corner of nave is a small coffin lid incised with a figure holding a heart, probably a heart burial, the remainder of the body having been interred elsewhere – the figure carries a hunting horn and it has been suggested that it commemorates Waleran Venator (Waleran the Huntsman), Lord of Wardour at the time of the Domesday; (5) squint to chancel; (6) altar-tomb to Mompesson family; (7) over north door of chancel, demi-figure to the Rev. Joseph Collier, rector during the civil War, who was ejected as “ignorant, scandalous, and inefficient” by the Puritans, and turned out homeless with wife and eleven children in wintery weather and deep snow.
Bathampton House, a fine early 18th century house about 1 mile to the west of the village on the road to Warminster, was the county house of the Mompessons, their town house being in the Close at Salisbury, which is now occupied by the bishop. (The Little Guide 1949, Methuen)
