The Parish Church of St. Mary

Stapleford sits on the River Till.  It’s church is a tall, compact building rising on a hill slope beside this pretty village.  Its glory is its magnificent late 12th Century arcade with massive round columns and fine capitals carrying four elaborately carved arches, the soffits of which still show some of the original painted decoration.  The south doorway is also 12th Century.

War, Conflict and Military Matters

The village has no WWI war memorial – many young men of the village took up arms and all returned without a single loss of life.  Stapleford has the unique title of Wiltshire’s only “Thankful Parish” the name given to those parishes whose parish sons all returned from the Great War.  As of 2015 this claim is in disrepute although no further information is available at present.
