The Parish Church of Holy Cross
In the extreme north west corner of the county is the sleepy one time coaching town of Sherston. Above its large cruciform church rises a lofty central tower, Gothic in design but built as late as 1730 presenting a new aspect of the versatility of the Early Georgian architect. The nave arcade is twelfth century with circular pillars and good capitals of the period. There is a fine thirteenth century window to the north transept; the chancel is of this date. Over the south porch is the battered figure of an individual known as “Rattlebones”, honoured locally as a hero who defended the town against the Danes.
