Parish Church of St. James
The site of St James has been a place of worship since the 11th century. Sevenhampton was formerly a chapelry of Highworth parish. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to Will. de Owe or William, Earl of Ewe or Eu, “whose descendants held it till the time of Henry the third when having been forfeited to the crown, it was given to the King’s eldest son, afterwards Edward the first.” The present owner, Francis Warneford Esq resides at ‘Warneford Place’ adjoining Sevenhampton. (seven homesteads) has a church (St. James) dating from 1863. Warneford Place is a fine Elizabethan mansion dating from 1566, the wings of which were added in 1734. It was the former seat of the Warneford family and is surrounded by an extensive park, through which is an avenue a mile long. [source: The Little Guide, Methuen 1949]
