Parish History
Thomas Hardy based his fictional Wessex town of Melchester on and around the sights, smells and life of the City of Salisbury. It is the only Cathedral City within the county, but is not the county town. It lies on two main railway links – The West of England Main Line which runs from London (Waterloo) to Exeter, St. David’s and is currently operated by South West Trains and the Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central line currently operated by First Great Western Trains on the Wessex Main Line.

Salisbury Poisonings
On the 4th March 2018, two people were found slouched on a bench in the Mill area of the City. It was later revealed that the two people were Sergei & Yulia Skripal, father and daughter. Sergei had been a double agent for the UK and Soviet intelligence services. It was also revealed that the two had been poisoned by a lethal nerve agent called ‘Novichok’. A Wiltshire police officer, Nick Bailey, who attended the initial scene was also poisoned. All three survived. Suspicion immediately fell upon agents of the Russian Government. The source of the poison remained a mystery until in June 2018 when a couple from Amesbury were poisoned in a similar manner, it was revealed that the man Charlie Rowley had found a bottle of perfume which he gave to his partner Dawn Sturgess unbeknown to them this contained the lethal poison. Sadly Dawn died of the poison but Charlie survived. Nobody has yet been brought to justice for the attacks.

Red Lion
Established in the 14th century, this is one of the finest examples of an old coaching inn in the country, and the ancient courtyard, with its magnificent hanging creeper and picturesque half timbering, is much as it was when the London – West Country stage would rumble through the great archway. One of the bars until the early 1960’s was for gentlemen only, a pleasing relic of the olden days, and in the dining room may be seen part of the original 14th century wall. Many ghosts and spooky incidents have been reported here, such as footsteps on staircases when no-one is there., a lady in Elizabethan dress, the sound of a child screaming and often musty smells appear for no apparent reason.
