Village History
Road Hill is probably infamous as the location of the horrific murder of Francis Savile Kent in 1860. The murder was that of a small child of about 4 years old and the perpetrator of the crime in all probability was his half sister Constance Kent. The case gained much following in the media at the time and even Charles Dickens had his theories. The detective Jack Whicher brought in from Scotland Yard failed to gain a conviction against Constance although he was adamant it was Constance and probably her brother. The case was to be Whicher’s Waterloo and he fell from grace within the Scotland Yard regime. Some years later Whicher was vindicated in his Suspicions when Constance confessed her crime insisting she carried out the act alone and unbeknown to anyone else. She was imprisoned and on her release she went to Australia where her brother had made a name for himself in the natural history world. The case was made into a TV film based on the book of the same name “The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher” by Kate Summerscale.
