The Parish Church of Sts. Peter and Paul (Abbey Church)
The huge fragment of the abbey church of Malmesbury towers above the town and is visible from some distance away. Most of the massive Norman nave remains to serve today as the parish church; eastwards of this are two lofty arches which once helped to carry the central tower and spire. The south porch is an elaborate example of Norman architecture and contains within it some early sculptured panels. High up on the south side of the nave is the medieval organ loft. Part of the west front of the abbey church is still standing. In the churchyard is a memorial to a barmaid who was struck down by a tiger! The 11th century witnessed an early experiment in aviation when the monk Egelmer launched himself from the tower of Malmesbury Abbey equipped with wings made of feathers. He is reported to have flown a furlong before making a bad landing and breaking both legs. read more about the Abbey & Church here

The Old Bell
The inn adjoins the lovely old Abbey of Malmesbury, and at one time formed part of the castle built by the Bishop of Sarum, when it served as a guest house for pilgrims. Parts of the old building still remain, including a fine 13th century mullioned window, and the front of the building is covered with a beautiful wisteria. The peaceful old-world garden marks the line of the old town and castle, and enjoys a fine view across the River Avon.
