The Churchyard Yew Tree

When visiting the church you can but notice the Yew Tree situated in the churchyard. The tree perhaps is as old as the original church building. A painting in 1806 shows it as a well established, large tree. Yews are closely connected with churchyards, evergreen indicating eternal life and the death of winter, but are also a custom carried over from pagan holy places, often the same sites now occupied by the Christian Church buildings. The Lyneham Yew is regarded as so important that it has been preserved over the years which has seen it treated, propped and secured.

Parish History

The Parish includes the hamlet of Bradenstoke-cum-Clack which had an Independent Chapel and St. Mary’s Church.  It also includes Clack and Preston.

An interesting point:  Richard Wildey, died 1707, his occupation was “castrator”!  After searching the Wiltshire Wills Index in its entirity no other person was listed with that occupation.
