Parish History

The town of Hungerford is 8 miles west of Marlborough in Wiltshire and 26 miles south west of Reading in Berkshire.

Historically, Hungerford was partly in Berkshire and partly in Wiltshire but is now completely within Berkshire.  Some records are held in Berkshire Record Office and some at Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre (see parish registers below).  The Wiltshire part of Hungerford was transferred to Berkshire jurisdiction on 28th March 1895.

Schools

Westfield House School

The school was established in 1842.  It closed its doors for a short time in 1884 but re-opened in 1889 with Mr. W. R. Taylor as headmaster, with three boarders and eight day boys. Mr Taylor remained until 1893.  In May 1893 the Curate of Hungerford, Rev. John Frederick Charles Denning, MA, became headmaster.  Rev. Denning remained in his post until the school closed in 1906
