Elections, Polls and Voters Lists
Electoral Registers
The men eligible to vote fell into various categories and depending on this they were allowed to vote at different types of elections. There were owner voters who usually owned a freehold house. There were occupation voters who occupied, but presumably did not own a property. There were lodgers. Finally there was a small group of men who did not live in the parish or have a house in the parish but they had been “registered by the Revising Barrister to vote at Holt”. Some men may have been able to vote in parliamentary, county and parochial elections. Some in parliamentary or parochial elections but not county. Others may have been able to vote in county and parochial but not parliamentary and lastly some may only have been able to vote in parochial. It may go some way to explain why names are listed at two different addresses. From 1894 women were allowed to vote in some local elections, but not parliamentary, if they were property owners. This explains the appearance of some women on the following registers.
