The Parish Church of St. Nicholas
(Old English. Heregeard’s hiwise = family holding) is usually abbreviated to “Harnish”. The church (St. Nicholas) was built in 1779 by Wood of Bath and is a charming little building in the Classic style. The churchyard contains a prominent monument to David Ricardo , M.P., the political and social economist (1823) , John Thorpe, the antiquary, is also buried there (1792). There is a wide-spreading view to the South from the churchyard embracing the Avon valley with the North edge of Salisbury Plain in the distance. (The Little Guides 1949, Methuen)
