Parish History

Great Cheverell has a church (St. Peter) with Perp. W. Tower, nave, porch, and S. chapel with fine roof. The chancel is Early English., and there is a good recessed tomb in N. wall, which may be that of the founder. The fine old S. door should be noticed. There is a marble monument to James Townsend and his wife (1750) and a tablet in the nave to the memory of Sir James Stonehouse, the “Mr Johnson” of Hannah More’s Shepherd of Salisbury Plain, recalls the fact that the “Shepherd” himself, Saunders by name, was also a resident here, and his cottage is still pointed out to visitors. The manor-house is an old building, excellently preserved, with a court-house and cells juxta-position. There is a beautiful view over the valley towards Devizes, and the fine hedgerow elms greatly enhance it. The manufacture of iron sheep-bells, which was carried on here for generations, has come to an end.   [source: The Little Guides, Methuen, 1949]
