Parish History
Fifield Bavant is one of Wiltshire’s smallest parishes, lying in the Chalke Valley between Ebbesbourne Wake and Bower Chalke. It was a separate parish for nearly 800 years, but in 1885 the civil parish lost it’s southern part (283 acres) to Bower Chalke and in 1894 the remaining 870 acres north of the River Ebble were annexed to Ebbesborne Wake. The ecclesiastical parish remained until 1923 when the benefice of St Martin (the 12th Century Noman church) was united with St John the Baptist, Ebbesbourne Wake.
One of the Chalke Valley’s eight manors listed in Domesday in 1086, it was then called Fifehide – the name seemingly derived from Five Hides, a hide being a unit of measurement used for assessment of land tax payable to the King). By 1463 the manor was recorded as ‘Fiffehyde Beaufaunt’ when ownership had passed to the Beaufaunt family, later spelt Bavant. Read more about Fifield Bavant’s history
