Parish Churches of All Saints and St. Mary
Historically there were two churches serving the village of Chitterne situated about 0.2 miles apart. Both churches were established in the early part of the 14th Century.
The earliest vicars listed are for All Saints in 1306 and for St. Mary’s in 1319. Church registers exist for both churches from 1654 as in 1653 since the two parishes were so small they were combined as one parish by Act of Parliament. The Benefices were united by deed in 1819 but did not share a vicar until the death of William Wapshare, Vicar of St. Mary’s.
The first shared vicar was William Macdonald who was the incumbent of All Saints at the time of Wapshare’s death. In 1861 the foundation stone was laid for the new church of All Saints & St Mary’s; the church was consecrated in 1862
