Stephen Duck – Poet and Clergyman born in Charlton c1705, committed suicide by drowning in Reading, Berkshire 21st March 1756 . He was buried in St. Andrew Churchyard, Sonning, Berkshire. An annual commemorative feast, the Duck Feast, is held at the Charlton Cat Inn in the village. It is funded by the revenue from a field (“Duck’s Acre”) presented by Lord Palmerston, to whom Duck had dedicated a volume of poetry.
