Parish Church of St. John The Baptist

Just below Salisbury the River Avon is joined by the Ebble River, beside which stands the church of St. John the Baptist, Bishopstone, a large cruciform building full of interest. It is for the most part of the fourteenth century. The chancel is vaulted, has elaborate sedilia, and is entered through a priest’s doorway of unusual elaboration. Within the north transept is a large tomb recess, and outside the south transept, which is vaulted, is a most unusual canopied mausoleum contemporary with the building. Near the priest’s doorway the walling shows signs of bullet scars which are said to be memorials of executions during the Civil War.
