Parish History

Berwick St. James lies upstream of Stapleford.  The church has humble architecture but possesses an unusual 15th century stone pulpit originally set in the north wall of the nave in the fashion of  monastic refectories; the church once belonged to Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire.  The chancel is well proportioned with lancet windows in a 12th century doorway.  The tower is dated 1670 and provides an excellent example of the respect paid, even at such a late date, to the architectural style embodied in medieval churches.
