The Parish Church of St. James
Surrounded by its sarsen stone sentinels stands the church of Avebury. Within it one can see the remains of very early pre-Conquest windows cheek by jowl with Tuscan columns set up in the early nineteenth century to replace low twelfth century nave arcades. West of the nave is a lofty bell tower; at its east end is a magnificent fifteenth century screen with its rood-loft still accessible from the rood-stair. The church has an arcaded tub-font of twelfth century date

The Avebury circle is one of the country’s finest prehistoric remains, and the subject of much excavation and interest. The inn stands in the centre of the famous megalithic circle on the site of the sacrificial altar, this being the largest religious stone circle known. The inn dates from 1619 and many of the original beams and open fire-places may be seen. An interesting feature is the old well, some 80 feet deep, which has been preserved and lighted for inspection.
