The Parish Church of James
(OE. Anstig = steep path) has a small cruciform EE. church (St. James) which has been mush restored. It contains some 17th-cent. bench-ends by Wyatt from Salisbury Cathedral. To the N. of the Church is an old Perp. building , now used as a workshop, which is said to have belonged to Shaftesbury Abbey ( The Little Guide 1949, Methuen).

Ansty was a royal free chapel and the only parish in the county with no ecclesiastical jurisdiction. Copies of registers were not required to be sent to the Bishop (Bishops Transcripts). Couples could marry here regardless of Banns or License. It also married couples when periods of canon law prohibited marriage.
