Highway Robbery

The first image is of the Robbers' Stone, Gore Cross, West Lavington. The inscription on the stone reads: "At this spot, Mr Dean, of Imber, was Attacked and Robbed by Four Highwaymen, in the evening of October 21st 1839. After a spirited pursuit of three hours one of the Felons BENJAMIN COLCLOUGH fell Dead on Chitterne Down. THOMAS SAUNDERS, GEORGE WATERS, and RICHARD HARRIS, were eventually Captured and convicted at the ensuing Quarter Sessions at Devizes, and Transported for the term of Fifteen Years. This Monument is erected by Public Subscription as a warning to those who presumptuously think to escape the punishment God has threatened against Thieves and Robbers."  (See the Tilshead parish photo gallery for an image of the stone where Colclough met his end).

The second image shows The Cleary family. Mr. Don Cleary has kindly allowed publication of these images - he is pictured in the front with his parents, his brother Bernard and a friend from the Lavington/Easterton area. Don would love to discover the name of the friend - does anyone recognise him? If so, please contact Teresa Lewis (Adninistrator) who will pass the details to Mr. Cleary.      Robbers Stone Photo Gallery

The school opened its doors to boys as a boarding and day school in 1895. Today it is a fully co-ed school with state of the art facilities. For a history/timeline of the school, visit Dauntsey School Website. Lookups and extracts from "The Dauntseian" school magazine for May 1971 (Issue 131) can be requested from Teresa Lewis (Administrator). The magazine contains details of sporting achievements and examination results as well as staff members and governors and interesting historical titbits about the village and school grounds.
