Kings Arms

This was a 16th century inn situated on Silver Street.  The building was demolished in 1860.  A watercolour painting of the building by artist William Wheatley is displayed in Trowbridge Museum.  A postcard of the painting can be viewed in the main Trowbridge Photo Gallery at the top of this page.

Trowbridge Cemetery

A mid 19th century cemetery laid out to the design of C E Davis of Bath with a broad central tarmac avenue flanked by an avenue of Irish yews dividing the consecrated and unconsecrated sections, two chapels, a lodge and serpentine outer walks. The chapels and other buildings were built in March 1855 and the main carriage drive was constructed the following month. Though it was extended in the latter part of the 20th century, the mid 19th century cemetery remains relatively unchanged, retaining the lodge, chapel and structural planting together with several significant monuments and mausolea which reflect the prosperity of Trowbridge in the 19th and early 20th century.             The two storey gothic-style lodge is constructed in stone under gabled tiled roofs. The two cemetery chapels are to the north and south of the main drive. The northern or Nonconformist chapel is a low cruciform structure with a tower, and a spire and weather vane at its south-west corner, built in early English style. The south or Anglican chapel comprises a four-bay chapel with a polygonal apse to the east and a tower at the north-east corner with short lancet windows. The cemetery contains three substantial mausolea and several monuments of significance.

Brown Mausoleum

The mausoleum was designed by A. S. Goodridge of Bath but completed by G M Silley of London when there were problems with the dome, and built in 1900 by Sir William Roger Brown (1831-1902) in memory of Lady Brown. Sir Roger was a leading figure in Wiltshire’s textile industry and employed some thousand people in his mills. A noted philanthropist, he provided a local school, and endowed two blocks of almshouses in memory of his wife.  He also set up a trust fund for the repair of the mausoleum.           The frieze of letters on the main elevation declares "HE THAT BELIEVETH IN ME THOUGH HE WERE DEAD YET SHALL HE LIVE".  The bronze gates, bearing the legend "I HAVE THE KEYS OF DEATH AND HADES", lead down a series of steps to the bronze doors of the red granite mausoleum. Sadly, the gates were reported stolen in 2012  and given that an attempt had also been made to forcibly remove the bronze doors a decision was taken to remove these to a secure location within the cemetery.  The bronze doors can be viewed by prior appointment with the Wiltshire County Council’s cemeteries division.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the gates is kindly asked to come forward to either Wiltshire Council or the Mausolea and Monuments Trust.  Photograph at the top of the page is published courtesy of The Mausolea and Monuments Trust.  Visit their website here

Although the Workhouse was known as the Melksham Union Workhouse it was situated in the parish of Semington.  Inmates from the Trowbridge parishes would have been housed here too.    Read a little about the Workhouse and see a plan of the layout here.            Workhouse photogallery

Trowbridge  Roll of Honour

Written and compiled by Harry Sanders and published by B. Lansdown and Sons, Duke Street and Silver Street, Trowbridge, Wiltshire. The book was published shortly after the end of the First World War to commemorate not only those men who died in the service of their country, but also all those who served. It is understood that the Vicar collected all the information from every family in Trowbridge who had relatives in the Armed Forces, and, in the case of the Fallen, a photograph of each man. The book thus provides an additional aid to those researching family in Trowbridge, and in many cases, a photograph to treasure, preserving the memory of each man for another generation.

The transcription of the first part of the book, in memory of those who died, is under way and can be found by clicking the links below. If anyone has a copy of this book and would like to complete the transcription please let the administrators know.                 Roll of Honour Photogallery
